Den & Playroom Redesign
Design Objective: Create a conceptual redesign of an existing space. The following profile outlines the design needs of the Madison Family Den & Playroom. This room is used as a, television room, playroom, and office/computer space. Due to the multi-use nature of this room, the Madison family is looking to update the space and improve functionality.
The Madison family consists of two adults and one 5-year-old boy. This family enjoys relaxing time together and often hosts gatherings or overnight guests. As such, their home has several spaces focused on entertaining however, the den functions as their common space to spend as a family while watching movies, football, and playing together.
The den is approximately 190 square feet containing a 7' couch, storage/coffee table, TV console, and desk to support a desktop computer (with office chair). The room features an 8’ 1” sliding glass door which exits onto the backyard deck. In the current room setup, the couch overhangs the stationary portion of the glass door by about 3’ which is not ideal, though not blocking the access to the doorway. Much of the furniture in the room acts as storage for children’s toys in both bins and storage boxes.
During our interview, the clients expressed that the storage in this room is extremely important but could be drastically improved. The family would like to change the current seating to a large couch that all three family members can share. Preferably, a new couch would be made of leather and feature a full-sized fold away bed. They would also like to add an ottoman and/or fold away trays to facilitate dining for their 5-year-old who often eats snack meals in this room. Additional lighting is also needed as this room has 4 can lights in the ceiling, but they do not illuminate the room enough. The clients would like to replace the flooring however, this may be done at a later date as part of an update to flooring throughout the house.
Color Rendering: Accent Wall
The family loves to snowboard so we chose to do a Tahoe theme in this room. Being a playroom, we went with literal mountain translation and a colorful rug "reflecting" the mountains in Lake Tahoe. The extreme "slope" of the natural wood desk echoes this feel as well.
Color Rendering: TV Wall
To maximize space and make the room feel larger, we reoriented the room lengthwise by hanging the TV on a short wall and adding some kid friendly, easily accessible storage shelves. To continue the outdoor theme, a golden bird lamp will add a soft glow to this side of the room.

Proposed Floor Plan
The current layout of the room makes it feel small and cramped. The family wants to add a sleeper sofa for guests so this will sit against the accent wall, the most visible wall from the kitchen & entertianment spaces of the home. A desk will sit against the South wall, and storage will move to the West wall with a hung TV to maximize space.
