Living Room Design

Design Objective: Create a conceptual design of a living room within a preset floor plan. All furniture should be chosen to fit the room while addressing the needs of universal design where possible. The room should contain seating for 4 or more, a desk, a media center, and be fitting for a family with a 4-year-old child.

In addressing the objective of this project, I wanted to create a bold, colorful design that could still be livable and comfortable. I first set out to determine the best layout of furniture to maximize space while making sure it will remain accessible to a range of people. Once this was solidified, the search for perfect pieces began.

The concept was to feature a contemporary style of furniture with flair. I chose a large L-shaped couch that could comfortably fit 4 and still allowed a minimum 36" of walkway space on all sides of the seating area.  A round marble top coffee table sits within the L to allow easy use & passage while remaining safe for young children (and everyone's shins). A long low media table sits flush against the wall to allow for additional storage. While this is a piece with corners, the 18" height is low enough to limit kids bumping heads. The TV will be hung for the best visibility and safety. Lastly, a rounded edge desk sits behind the couch, acting as additional seating as well as a console table. A brightly colored soft chair adds an extra seat for guests and won't wear out a work from homer.

For the colors in this room, the words bold & fun were front of mind. In a palette I can only describe as soft neon (a contradiction, I know), the various pops of color help carry your eye throughout the space without overwhelming any one area. Incorporating black, white, and wooden pieces help soften to bright colors and ground the space. Gentle line art adorns the light grey walls with the opposing walls in a cool teal. To bring even lighting into the room, a graphic chandelier adds some drama while a soft sconce lights up the teal accent wall. To make this home cohesive, a coral color front door is your first connection to the palette and space.
